DEREK DAVIS

COACH

I started CrossFit in 2012 at CrossFit Southie after running the Boston Marathon and was looking for an option to continue to get in shape. My girlfriend (now wife) signed us both up for an introduction class. To be honest, after the warm up, I had a pretty good sweat going and thought, “7 minute WOD, how bad could that be?”… It was bad. About two and half minutes in, I was hunched over gasping for air, when one of the coaches (Chris Gosler) walked by with an encouraging “Come on man, keep going” so I did… as best I could. At the end I couldn’t understand how out of shape I was having just run a marathon.

After a challenging start to CrossFit, it took a nutrition challenge to really get me hooked. Committing to at least 3 WODs a week and eating healthier than I ever had before started to show big improvements. I lost weight and was able to increase all my benchmark wods. Also in that time, I felt that I really became a part of the community at CrossFit Southie. Working out with the same people day in and day out led to friendly competition, as well as competition with members in other classes, always checking the whiteboard to see who did what. The nutrition challenge results got me hooked, and the competition in the gym pushed me to be better.

In 2014 I completed the CrossFit Level 1 coach’s course and started coaching at CrossFit Southie in 2015. I was psyched to start coaching because of how much my coaches had helped me improve. I wanted to do that for others.

Fast forward to today. I live in Duxbury with my wife Tara, son Declan (4), daughter Lucy (2) and our pup Murphy, and run a small General Contracting company that specializes in federal contracts. We enjoy spending as much time outside as we can. Camping, hiking, walking the various bogs of Duxbury, or hitting the drive on, whatever it is, fresh air is our preference. As a family we’re looking forward to becoming a bigger part of the community, both in the town, and here at STRIVE.
